Thesis "Development and Application of a Simulation Model for Hydroponic Greenhouses"

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our approximately 1,400 employees work for a sustainable, economic, secure, and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our main research areas of energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use. Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, company spin-offs and global collaborations, we are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system.

For our group "Thermal Integration" we are looking for a student assistant with the opportunity to write their Bachelor’s, Diploma or Master’s thesis to start by 16.09.2023.

Would you like to play an active role in shaping the energy transition and gain practical experience during your studies?

With us you will work on the realization of this goal. Together with project partners we are considering the potential of hydroponic green houses for the use in arid areas. Extremely scarce water resources on the one hand and a high local demand of plant-based products for the ensuring of food security on the other pose the challenges for agriculture in these parts of the world.

Traditional green houses in the form of foil tunnels have a significant disadvantage in terms of water efficiency and sustainability. One solution could be hydroponic green houses, which offer a quasi-closed atmosphere with optimal conditions in terms of temperature, humidity, and supply of nutrients.

Within this project we want to look at different concepts through simulations and analyze their feasibility, where you actively support us with your thesis about the creation of a simulation model for hydroponic green houses in arid areas.

What you will do

  • You will work as part of a scientific project about the analysis of the potential of hydroponic greenhouses and specifically on the question of temperature and humidity regulation with renewable energies
  • You will familiarize yourself with the topics hydroponic greenhouses, air conditioning and thermal as well as membrane-based desalination
  • You will create the simulation model in Modelica, will implement various concepts and ideas for temperature and water management and analyze and evaluate your results
  • You get insights in the various questions of solar air conditioning and water treatment
  • Your tasks also include literature research and the documentation of your results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying process engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering or a similar technical or scientific course of studies
  • Knowledge about the creation of simulation models, especially with Modelica, are an advantage but not a requirement
  • You have a basic understanding of thermodynamic processes or want to deepen your knowledge
  • You can plan upcoming tasks self responsibly and proactively and have an appropriate time management
  • You enjoy simulation tasks
  • You can communicate confidently in both German and English

What you can expect

  • We are one of the most popular employers, where you work at eye level with the best
  • Open-minded colleagues are happy to welcome new talent into their ranks
  • We offer flexible working time models and give you the opportunity to work from home at times
  • We cultivate a cooperative working atmosphere and open communication
  • We have attractive sports and health programs and after-work activities for you
  • We value equal opportunities and provide room for diversity

Remuneration is based on the degree of completion of the university education.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

Interested? Apply online now (including CV, motivation letter and certificates, if available). We look forward to getting to know you!
